The Performer (Enneagram 3)

The performers are beyond this ready to change themselves to fit in with their personal ideals. You’ll see the three as an extremely persistent but anxious hard-worker, ready to keep channeling themselves towards their dreams, and the performers will be showing high care and passion for their dream and what they believe in.

The performers may sometimes be prone to obstinate behaviour however, as when challenged on their dreams and criticism, they will often resist listening to other people. At times, their high anxiety can also make them prone to overworking themselves.

The performer is the anxious hard-worker. Driven to prove themselves to their loved ones through hard-work and through gaining a high income or accomplishing some kind of feat, performers are typically driven to place themselves in situations that are far outside their personal comfort zone.

General Description

Common traits: Success-oriented, liberal, popular, hard-working, industrious, productive, Stage-personality

As an Enneagram three type, your core drive is to work to overcome some flaw in yourself and to become more successful. An enneagram three type sees themselves as struggling to succeed in their career or their dreams and ambitions. They are often channeling themselves towards work and will be working hard to earn the stage and to be worthy of fame and success.

As an Enneagram Three type, you care highly about success and how you reach it, and you will struggle to feel satisfied with what you have and with your current life. This yearning for more is what gives you the power to truly push yourself to the limits, but it can also get you to miss out on the good things in life. Enneagram three types struggle to recognise good things in life and to appreciate success on the way towards their goals.

Beyond this, their goals and ambitions often take them far away from their comfort zone, into situations they will rarely enjoy or find to be positive. They can have a somewhat obstinate tendency in this regard, as they take on challenges and work to make it in fields and environments that bring them a great deal of stress and discomfort.

Enneagram 3 Big 5

Enneagram 3

These outgoing and agreeable types adhere to and try to live up to external rules and criterias rather than personal criterias. Often, they are prone to crowd-pleasing, or working hard to impress a boss, but struggling to take personal initiatives. They’re also known to cut corners and to skip ahead, if they think it will give them an edge over other people.

They want to become popular and liked through giving people an impressive show, doing what people want in a way that will be met by cheers and recognition from others. And while Enneagram 3s are more open than Enneagram 2s, they still struggle to be true to themselves and to go their own path, because they are too focused on what is trendy or what people like in the moment.

Enneagram 3 Development levels

Infant: Early in their lives, 3s are preoccupied with being loved and admired by their parents. They are the first to show their skills and to try to impress through doing their homework or tasks that will make their parents proud.
Child: In this state, Enneagram 3s become more focused on their family or closest ones. They brag about their parents and how successful and good their parents are, and are quick to cover for and to hide issues in the family.
Teen: Here, 3s start becoming more critical of their parents. They want to distinguish themselves more and start trying to beat or outperform siblings and family members.
Young adult: Here, E3s often find a boss or institution that they admire or idealise. They work hard to become popular within this institution. They try to charm their way in.
Adult: E3s will here begin to become more focused on distinguishing themselves within an institution or society, proving their capabilities in society.
Accomplished adult: At this stage, Enneagram 3s become more focused on the success of their peers or people around them. They want badly for their own kids or for up & coming individuals to distinguish themselves and bet on the success of someone or something they believe in.
